Expanding the epidemiologic spectrum of TTR amyloidosis in Spain. A new epidemiological focus in Zamora

Objective

The presence of a new epidemiological focus of Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy (FAP) is reported.

Methods

The demographic, clinical and genetic characteristics of the study are analyzed.

Results

The prevalence in this new focus is higher than in the rest of the national foci but lower than in Portugal. All patients are carriers of c.148G>A (Val30Met) mutation.

Conclusions

The hypothesis of the Portuguese origin of the Zamoran focus is developed both from a genetic and historical point of view.
